Overview

Barbados is an independent English-speaking Commonwealth country with a dynamic economy. It has been an independent nation since November 30, 1966. The most easterly of the Caribbean islands, it is just over three (3) hours by plane from Miami, four and one-half (4 ½) hours from New York and eight (8) hours from London.

Solid leadership has served this 166-square mile island well, maintaining its political, economic and social stability. As its first legislature was established in over 360 years ago in 1639, Barbados has the third oldest parliament in the British Commonwealth, surpassed by only Bermuda and Britain.

From the very beginning, Government's policy has been a firm commitment to the social and economic development of the island. The Government of Barbados therefore fully supports inward investment and ensures that the appropriate incentives and legislation are in place to give confidence and predictability to investment decisions. It has also put special programmes in place to stimulate local entrepreneurship, protect the enviable quality of life enjoyed by all citizens and to preserve the beautiful natural environment.

Barbados has now matured into a world class business centre, offering the professionalism and high level of management necessary to sustain its development. The country has consistently placed highly in the United Nations Human Development Index, outranking all other nations in Latin America and the Caribbean in the 2006 survey with its ranking of number 29. Indeed, it ranks third in the Americas, led only by Canada (no. 1) and the USA (no.2).
