Q: What’s your name and what’s your project/business?

A: I’m Dario Alleyne from Bim EV Rental Services. We provide fully electric vehicle rentals to locals and tourists. Our first product is the electric scooter.

Q: Tell us one thing you’re proud of since the inception of Bim EV.

A: When I actually received the scooters and saw the project come to life. That, along with the feedback from potential customers, has been overwhelming.

Q: Why did you choose to sign up for Bloom? How do you think it can help you?

A: I chose to sign up with Bloom because they stood out for their focus on sustainable energy and all that was being offered for start-ups. The business advice and the opportunity for potential investors and financial support were key factors in my choice.  Bloom can help me by providing individual coaching to get the business off the ground, as well as business promotion.

Q: Is there anything you learned or gained so far from participating in Bloom that helped you to keep moving forward? How was that helpful?

A: I have learned how to create a professional business plan and business model for continuous growth. This is very helpful as the business expands. It can support our ability to effectively improve and update to meet the needs of the business and its investors.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience in your cleantech journey?

A: Obtaining a physical office space to perform day to day activities has stood out to me. I truly felt the project was moving forward and the pieces were starting to fall into place.

Q: What are the top challenges you faced or are facing? How are you dealing with these or what do you think could be helpful?

A: The challenges I am currently facing are the high permit fees per scooter as a start-up. It would be helpful if there were concessions or a different rate for electric vehicles or scooters, as I am paying the same fees as a combustion engine vehicle of any size.

Q: Where are you now on your journey to success? How have you grown?

A: I am currently seeking to acquire the rental permits in order to launch. This entire process has taught me patience and that nothing worth having will come easy. I am more motivated and confident in my project.

Q: What keeps you going?

A: The desire to be successful, my family and friends. They have strongly supported me from day one and have kept me going.

Q: What does success look like for you?

A: Success for me is being the number one choice for electric vehicles and seeing the majority of Barbados and the Caribbean using Bim EV products. It is also being a major competitor in the sustainable energy sector within the Caribbean and seeing my customers happy, healthy and saving money.

Q: What advice would you give to other aspiring cleantech innovators?

A: Stay focused and never lose sight of your goals.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

A: I would like to thank Bloom Cleantech for this opportunity and Fund Access, as well as the advisors who continue to guide me in this venture.

* Bloom is a sustainable energy and climate technology (cleantech) cluster hosted by the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC). It is being established in partnership with the Ministry of International Business and Industry (MIBI) and technical assistance by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Barbadian entrepreneurs have been limited in their ability to develop, plan, install and maintain new, green technologies. With a focus on sustainable energy technology innovation, industrial development and entrepreneurship, Bloom is building partnerships between the Barbados government, local businesses, citizens and the academic community. Through these partnerships, Bloom is positioned to help Barbadian cleantech projects and entrepreneurs flourish.
